My only reason for not switching over full time to Xandros is there is still not enough third party software being written for the Linux application, but its getting there. by hammerhead - 2/3/07 7:10 PM

And therein lies the only remaining YET most significant problem. Why don't I have a MAC or a NIX box I use alot ?  The software.

    Dual booting doesnt count.

    Takes too long.

If I could Alt+Tab to MAC i'd do it.

Dual booting doesn't take too long. Decide what OS you wan to use, BEFORE you boot and use it. Same time.

Parallels will let you use Windows immediately in a window, in your X10 OS. That is you Alt=Tab equivalent. The real hassle is dealing with the keyboard changes, otherwise works real well with 2 gigs of RAM.

Was Windows XP Microsoft's last good OS?

Windows Vista is a disaster. Windows Mobile is unusable. Is there hope for Microsoft?

MS does a very good job of dealing with hairball software and hardware,

The Vista Crisis is communication crisis. Usually between an end user idiot and an operating system. All Operating Systems require a modicum of understanding before acceptance oblivion!

I recently replaced the computer at my office desk with a new, surprisingly inexpensive, HP from Office Depot.  I am still amazed at how much you get for the money these days.  Keep in mind that I used to shop at MWAVE and assemble my own computers from the motherboard up just because I was so picky about hardware and I thought I was saving money.  I will not do that again.

Vista Home Premium was pre-installed on the new HP.  I had heard about all the problems with Vista.  I have a couple of unused XP licenses so I considered just downgrading to XP from the outset.  But … after Vista loaded, I was hooked by the slick graphics.   I would give it a try.   I had read that Vista Home Premium was not best for networking.  Oh yeah … Microsoft says that on the feature comparison chart for Vista versions.  Since my MediNotes is networked I did have some concern that my Vista desktop would not work well with my 5 year-old XP server (Ah yes … I remember loading the RAID drivers from a 3.5 inch floppy).  Surprise, surprise!!  I installed the MediNotes client on my new Vista HP and everything worked!  I did have to add the new HP to the network workgroup and enter user passwords but that is just plain old Windows network stuff.  I am not a Windows network expert at all.  I just followed the instructions on the wizards.  I’m off to a good start! MediNotes is working.

I usually print to the main printer connected to the server.  The HP LaserJet 2420 has a complicated driver and I have had problems with it in the past.  No problem.  Networked printing worked fine.

Now, here is the bad news:

    Dragon doesn’t work with Vista.

Well … it does if you upgrade to Dragon 9.5.  I was happy with my Dragon 8 upgraded from Dragon 7.  I really had not planned to spend the money to upgrade to Dragon 9.5.  Gotcha!!  I spent more upgrading Dragon so that it would work on Vista than I spent on my new computer, including the Vista OS, … just to put things in perspective.  That is why there is no Vista patch for earlier versions of Dragon.

    Here’s another Gotcha!!

Vista Home Premium does not include fax integration like Windows XP.  You have to upgrade to Vista Business or Vista Ultimate to get “Windows Fax and Scan”.  Now I’m starting to get a little irked.  I resolve not to pay the upgrade price just to get faxing.  I searched online and found Snappy Fax Version 4.0 for $29.99 to download.  It installed and worked perfectly.  I can print my MediNotes items to the Snappy Fax printer and off they go to my referring physicians, etc.  I’m sure there are a hundred fax programs out there but this is just the first one I found that works with Vista.  I really should go to pure internet faxing, though.  (My current send2fax doesn’t integrate with Office 2007 and can’t be set up as a printer in Vista.  Maybe it’s time to move on. Any suggestions?)

Here’s another Gotcha!! The new HP included an HDTV tuner and Windows Media Center.  I don’t have cable at the office but I found myself perusing the HDTV antennas at Radio Shack.  Someone please help me!!  “Must not install HDTV at my desk in the office” ... the real office where earn my living.

    More later,

    Hal

You have just scratched the surface of things that no longer work with Vista. I guess you don't have any PocketPC devices. I actually tried to downgrade a new Vista laptop to XP, but that didn't work either--there were no XP drivers for that new laptop. Such is life. I remember being reduced to tears over DOS. And people think we're out here having fun?

Hard to image how user unfriendly Vista is

    *AFTER*

they ripped out all the relevant advances (ie. WinFS).

    ==

    And the Hardware problems.

    And the Power Sucking Features

And the Draconian Digital Rights Management.

I install a "special" version of Vista that ripped all the MS crap out and it works well.

Runs well on a 9 year old PC.

As running your own PC becomes increasingly needless, it will be for hobbiests like myself, and average users, ie. my mom, will have more web connected  terminals with heavy web features.

This will be accelerated as your TV, your computer, your phone, your device, your car TV, your kid's TV/Computer all function as a "computer" and not just like their original device.

My mom wants to check her email and ebay.

    She doesn't want a PC.

I'm making Vista Business my main server, one application at a time for obvious reasons.   This may sound crazy but with respect to hardware and software, it is more compatible than Windows 2003 and the Enterprise version of Windows 2008.

My new philosophy is try ever thing in a Virtual box before employing in a production setting.

    Everyone,

I am very sad to see the low opinions of Vista on this forum as I have seen in other forums.  If I may point out a few details and my opinion:

    * I heard many of the same complaints about Windows XP.  Windows 2000 ran happily with 256MB of RAM but then came XP with its power hungry need for a full 512MB to run worthwhile.  Not to mention the additional hard drive space.

    * Continuing with the first point, Windows XP was considered EVIL upon the release of service pack 2 which broke many apps and included the annoying popups if you didn't have anti-virus protection installed - and it had to be the lastest version of that antivirus software or it wouldn't know to tell Windows it was installed and hence get rid of the popup.

    * Malicious websites that use to totally destroy Windows 2000 and make a good run at Windows XP don't stand a chance against Vista in my experience.

    * With Windows XP and previous versions of Windows, everyone was logged on to the system as Administrator or with Administrative Rights.  In fact, many programs such as Quickbooks REQUIRED administrative rights just to run.  In fact, if you were not logged in to Windows XP with an account that had admin rights, Quickbooks would give you an error to that effect!!!  Vista brings us closer to the reality of users being logged in as just that - users - thanks to user account control.

    * Many of the hardware incompatibilities you have seen are the result of poorly written drivers.  Network and video drivers are among the worst.

    * Yes, Vista does require more hardware to run than XP - just as XP required more than Windows 2000 - and let us not forget how big a jump Windows 2000 was over NT.  But that's because we demand more from our computers.  Try this experiment: Sit behind a Windows 98 or 2000 computer and type a word document, send an email, and surf the web.  Then do the same thing in Vista.  Feel the difference?  Vista looks better and flows better.  If you are like me and spend the vast majority of your day with your eyes GLUED to the computer screen either administering networks or writing code, have a nice user interface to look at goes a long, long way.

    * Not a single one of you here should ever buy a computer with Windows XP Home or Vista Home editions.  If you did, you screwed yourself.  Everyone here should be purchasing the business editions (i.e. XP Professional and Vista Business or Enterprise).  Most of you based on what I've read have already figured out that getting the cheaper home edition doesn't suit your needs.

With Vista the rule is simple - you should be on updated hardware with updated third party apps.  Check the website of your manufacturers to see what version of their hardware/software is supported.  This is the same rule we had when XP came out and the same one we had when 2000 came out.

Vista offers many enhanced security features and a more appealing interface.  I recommend we all give it a second chance - especially now that Service Pack 1 is about to be out.  Stop listening to the morons over at ZDNet who get paid to find someone to make up stuff about.

Many of us think our compaints about Vista are new.  To me, it's the year 2002 all over again.

Microsoft has announced a price drop on all versions of Vista except home basic.

I had Business Premium on my new laptop which is now running Ubuntu.

MS Vista has been rated "the worse program for 2007" by CNET, PC Magazine, download.com, and Yahoo tech among other websites. Check out:

MS Office 2007 also is crập; in the AC website, one user had to choose between using Office 2007 and AC. He chose AC...

Nuance (nee: Scansoft) is doomed.  As Microsoft Speech picks up, Nuance's only hope is a happy installed base.  Making Dragon 8 incompatible with Vista is pure game playing.    People remember being conned for a long time.

They are relasing increasingly terrible products.  PaperPort 11 is terrible - the only reason I use it is because Synapse is able to overcome it's slow networking.   I guess that PaperPort was just a holding pattern for me anyway as I decided what EMR to Go Live with.  With Synapse's blazing Document management and more importantly - METADATA - Paperport looks clunky.

    Murdoch,

The reason you are having to upgrade Dragon for it to work with Vista is the same reason many has to upgrade Quickbooks.  Check out the following post from George Ou:
